Access
Please contact the Headteacher concerning access to documents in the school. Also contact the Headteacher as to how to make a formal complaint about the school curriculum and about religious worship.

Religious Education
Religious Education is concerned with religious and spiritual experience. It is concerned with personal values, respect and feelings for others, and an awareness and understanding of the religious diversity of present-day society.
To help us in our task, we follow the Hillingdon Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. Its objectives are as follows:
  • The principal aim of religious education is to enable pupils to understand the nature of religious beliefs and practices, and the importance and influence of these on the lives of believers.
All religious education in the school is inter-denominational, but parents have the right under Section 22 of the 1994 Education Act to withdraw their child from religious worship or instruction.

Extra-Curriculum Activities
These are arranged for those who wish to acquire particular skills in Netball, Football, Choir and Computers. Sessions occur at lunch-time or after school. Those pupils staying after 3.20pm must obtain their parent's permission. Parents must be responsible for their child's safe journey home after school.

School Discipline
Discipline in school is based on co-operation. We aim to make children aware that we all have rights and claims, and that we all have certain standards and values to maintain.
  • Considerate and orderly behaviour at all times. This is in the interests of safety and concern for others.
  • Children must keep away from designated prohibited areas, e.g. car park, front of school, etc.
  • Toys or other valuable items (such as fashionable clothing) must not be brought to school.
  • Jewellery must not be worn (except for small studs for pierced ears).

Bullying
Deanesfield has a clear policy for dealing with any instances of bullying which are identified, although these are extremely rare.
The objectives of the policy are:
  • To enable all pupils to understand what constitutes bullying (verbal and physical).
  • To enable all pupils to feel confident that ant type of bullying will be firmly dealt with in school.
  • To enable all children to understand that bullying of any kind will not be tolerated at Deanesfield.
  • To sustain a non-violent ethos throughout the school.

Sanctions, if necessary
  • An apology
  • Staying in at breaktimes
  • Not allowed to stay at school at lunchtimes - taken home by parents
  • Withdrawal of privileges
  • Sent to Headteacher - parents informed
  • Governors involved
  • Exclusion in remote cases

Parental Support
When your child attends Deanesfield you automatically become a member of the Parent Teacher Association.
The aim of the P.T.A. is to support the school and to provide the "extras" not normally provided by the Borough.
We hope that new parents will feel welcome, put forward new ideas and have a little time to give. The P.T.A. Annual General Meeting is held in the Spring Term.
Parents help in the following ways:
  • accompanying children to swimming and visits outside school
  • with cookery and needlework
  • in the Junior and Infant libraries
  • in the environmental area
  • at school functions
  • in making and ironing costumes for drama productions and making scenery, etc.
However, the most valuable support that you, as parents, can give to your child is to show that you are interested in their educational development, to give them time and encourage them to participate fully in the life of the school.

Absence from School
Whenever your child is absent from school, a brief note stating the cause of absence is required.
Parents whose children will be leaving for house moving, etc. are kindly asked to let the school know in good time, together with the new home address and the address of the new school, if known.
Children are not allowed to leave for any reason unless they bring a note from parents requesting this.

Annual Family Holidays
If there is any choice over the question of when holidays take place, please arrange them to coincide with school holidays so that disruption of important schooling need not occur.
If holidays have to be taken during term-time, please remember that two weeks in any one school year (September-July) is regarded as the maximum.
Please write to the Headteacher requesting absence. Your full co-operation over this matter would be appreciated.

Pastoral Care
It is our aim to build a sound relationship with all our parents. Problems occur from time to time in most families. If parents feel that they have a problem that could affect their child's progress and well-being, they should not hesitate to contact the Headteacher for an appointment.
We consider it is our responsibility to influence the children socially and to inculcate high standards of conduct and integrity. We aim to ensure that children have a positive attitude towards learning and stress the importance of good presentation and pride in one's own work. This attitude must, of course, be extended to pride in the school.
We are all concerned that the child's school day should be a happy one, and it is important to your child that we work together.
Your child's teacher will be an important addition to his/her life, but never as important as you are. Education starts at home. However, a deliberate endeavour is made to foster a caring school community, and both teachers and the school Welfare Assistant play major roles in creating this.
Children thought to have serious learning difficulties are referred to the Educational Psychologist, who consults with the parents, teacher and Headteacher, in an effort to find a possible solution to the child's problems.

Clothing for P.E.
Infants

Your child does not need any special clothing for P.E. and Movement as this is done in underwear and bare feet. However, during summer months, he/she will need shorts, plimsolls and a tee-shirt for outdoor games. Please put these in a slipper bag with a draw-string top, all clearly marked with your child's name.
Juniors
Girls and Boys - black or white shorts, white tee-shirt, plimsolls (not trainers).

School Uniform
Girls

  • Grey skirt or pinafore dress
  • White blouse
  • Green and white dress (Summer)
  • Bottle green jumper/sweatshirt
  • School tie (green/yellow stripes) optional

Boys
  • Grey trousers
  • White shirt
  • Bottle green pullover/sweatshirt
  • School tie (green/yellow stripes) optional
School ties can be obtained from Altons Ltd, High Street, Ruislip.
Tee-shirts and sweatshirts can be ordered at the school office.

Medical Facilities, Pupil Sickness
The school has a qualified Welfare Assistant to care for children who become unwell during the course of the day. It is essential that the school has up-to-date instructions on how to contact parents in case of emergency.
It is essential that parents notify the school of any medical condition that may affect a pupil in any school activity, e.g. asthma, epilepsy, etc.
We cannot take the responsibility for medicines in school and strongly recommend that your child stays at home until the course of treatment is complete.
In special cases we may permit you to come in yourself and administer the dose. Please see the Headteacher if you wish to do this and are in any difficulty over the matter.
There are checks on vision, hearing, teeth and hygiene from time to time.
Children contracting an infectious disease must have clearance from the Doctor before returning to school.
If children are to be collected for a clinic or hospital appointment, a note to this effect, also stating the time, would be appreciated.

Lost Property
Parents are requested to mark all items of clothing clearly with their child's name. So many items from multiple stores are now so similar that it becomes increasingly difficult to trace lost property, unless there is clear identification.

School Times
  • A.M. 8.50 - 12.00 Infant
  • A.M. 8.50 - 12.05 Junior
  • P.M. 1.15 - 3.20 Infant and Junior

Nursery children attend either the morning or afternoon session at:
  • A.M. 9.00 - 11.30
  • P.M. 12.45 - 3.15

Road Safety
Parents who drive children to and from school by car are requested not to park on the yellow "SCHOOL - KEEP CLEAR" signs outside the school. This makes it very hazardous for children on foot who wish to cross the road.
All parents of Innfant children are requested to meet them outside the entrance at the end of the main corridor. The class teacher will wait with the children until they have been collected.
The front entrance is for those parents and visitors who need to call at the office.

Personal Accident Insurance Cover for Pupils
The London Borough of Hillingdon, in common with practically every other local authority in the country, carries what is almost standard insurance cover - i.e. Third Party Insurance Policy. This means that if an accident was to befall a pupil then a successful claim could be made if negligence were to be proved on the part of the Council or any of its employees.
The Authority does not have a personal accident insurance policy which relates to children in its schools. Parents, if they wish, may of course make their own arrangements either by taking out a separate policy or by modifying any existing insurance policy.

Charging Policy
The Governors recognise the importance and the valuable contribution that visits can make towards the children's education. We are not allowed to make charges for activities that take place in school time. However, to enable us to implement the National Curriculum fully, we arrange a number of field trips and meet the cost from our capitation or P.T.A. funds.
We arrange a trip for Year 6 pupils. As this visit takes place outside school time a charge is made. Members of staff give their time freely in order to accompany the children on this trip.
Cookery is taught throughout the school. The cost of the ingredients is funded by the P.T.A.

Parent, Teachers' Association
All parents are automatically members of this association. It provides valuable support for the school and a number of different events are held throughout the year. The A.G.M. is held in the Spring Term.

Conclusion
Your child will be spending 6-7 years at Deanesfield. We hope that this will have provided you with the necessary information and guidance to obtain the maximum benefit for your child from the education offered here.
The good wishes of the Head and Staff are extended to your family. May we now build a happy and successful partnership.
