Easter
Decorated egg (9K)
Year 5 had a decorated egg competition
UK schools always have a holiday of about two weeks at Easter. Children usually get chocolate eggs from their parents or relatives, but few seem to have customs relating to the Easter Bunny. Sometimes families decorate hardboiled eggs, and sometimes there are hunts for chocolate or hardboiled eggs around the house or in the garden. Some people go for a short family holiday in Easter week, and some visit friends and relatives. There are hot cross buns in the shops. Some people give Easter cards to people in their family, though not usually to lots of friends and relatives like they do at Christmas. Some people go to church on Easter Sunday.

We emailed several other schools around the world to see if we could compare customs at Easter. These are some replies from New Zealand:

This is how we celebrate Easter - my family has to find our Easter eggs. I only get small Easter eggs but my sisters get big Easter eggs because they are older then me. Our nana gives us an Easter egg and our mum gives us one too. We just stay home on Easter Day.

At Easter time we get our eggs under the fireplace and the big ones beside. Easter Bunny gives our family the same amount of Easter eggs so we don't fight. My mum and dad don't get Easter eggs because they are too old. We have hot cross buns and we have fat tummies by the end of it.

For Easter, Easter Bunny leaves the eggs on the table. When we get up I am the last one up. My sisters wake me up. We have Hot Cross Buns.
Zoe

For Easter we sometimes go places and we hide the Easter eggs away. For Easter I would like one big Easter Bunny. I enjoy Easter holidays sometimes, sometimes it is very boring. I don't go to church, and I don't eat hot cross buns.

When Easter comes I will be excited. We will have some days off school. Some people celebrate Easter. My mum gives me and my brother Easter eggs. My dad gives me and my brother chocolate money. Last year Easter Bunny gave us a big, big Easter egg.

Over in NZ people give Easter eggs all over. Everybody has 4 days off work and school. Easter Bunny leaves me 10 Easter eggs. And my mum and dad leave me one big one. We like to eat hot cross buns for lunch. I like them warm. I visit nana.

For Easter I go up to Auckland and stay with my aunty and uncle. I like going to see places. I hate hot cross buns.
