School Log Book Extracts - 1947

January 7th, 1947
Spring Term commenced today. Only 80% of children were present due to measles chiefly and bad weather.
 
January 13th, 1947
An S.O.S message from Miss F. Buckingham, Headmistress of the Bourne Primary School came at 9.00am for the loan of some teachers, as she had five teachers short. Our Miss Williams and Miss House willingly volunteered their services for the morning session, and Miss Williams for the afternoon session. Mr Yates took Miss Williams' class and the children from Miss House's class were spread over the Infant School.
 
January 27th, 1947
Half yearly examinations were scheduled to start this morning, but owing to the severe wintry weather, low attendance and shortage of teaching staff, I have had to postpone the examinations. The temperature in all classrooms is below 40 degrees Farenheit at 9.30am. Two fires are alight in all rooms. I have secured a plumber to cope with frozen lavatories and wash basins.
 
January 29th, 1947
Temperature in all classrooms was below freezing at 9.00am. In no rooms was it above 45 degrees Farenheit during the day.
 
January 30th, 1947
Conditions in school, owing to severe weather, are appalling. All lavatories, washbasins and pipes are completely frozen up. Classroom temperatures were all below 30 degrees at 9.00am, and only in two classrooms has temperature risen to 45 degrees during the morning. Instructions from the Divisional Officer, after consultation with the District Medical Officer state that school shall be closed this afternoon and tomorrow. Attendance 237 out of 447.
 
February 3rd, 1947
Plumbers have worked throughout the weekend to thaw out frozen tanks and pipes so that school could re-open this morning.
 
February 4th, 1947
Miss Williams returned to duty today. She was delayed on the railway near Stroud, due to snowdrifts.
 
February 7th, 1947
Mr Watson of Long Drive, who is a student at Nelson Hall Emergency Teacher Training College, Stafford, has commenced Teaching Practice today. The College has closed down owing to a temporary shortage of fuel.
 
February 18th, 1947
School re-opened this morning, after two days mid-term break. On my arrival this morning I found that owing to the severe wintry conditions prevailing still, all water tanks, pipes and cisterns were frozen, and no lavatories were functioning. After consultation it was agreed that the school should be closed, except for milk and meals services.
 
February 27th, 1947
The Selective Examination for the allocation of pupils to Secondary Schools commenced today. The Intelligence paper was taken by 56 pupils, five children who were absent on account of sickness will be entered for a supplementary exam later. The Intelligence Test booklets have been marked and I.Qs. found.
 
March 5th, 1947
I, Miss Robbens, had to break my three years' clean record, and absent myself from duty, having suffered an eye injury.
 
March 19th, 1947
48 children from Class A were taken to the Wesminster District on an approved educational visit. The party left school at 9.30am and returned at 3.45pm.
 
March 26th, 1947
Class A, for the second time this term, went on an educational visit. This visit was to the Parish Church of Ruislip. 48 children and 3 teachers were taken round the church by the vicar, The Reverend Edward Mortimer, who gave the party a most interesting account of the church, its history and architecture.
 
May 9th, 1947
Our Mr E.A. Yates and Mr. R.L. Quince leave the staff today. They are commencing their Teacher's Training Course at Newlands Park, Chalfont St. Giles.
 
May 23rd, 1947
Empire Day. Celebrations were held in the Hall this morning.
 
May 24th, 1947
Mr N. Mitchell has been offered a vacancy in thr Newlands Park Emergency Training College. He has to report at the College tomorrow so leaves us this afternoon.
 
June 2nd, 1947
Mr Wright has been sent to replace Mr Yates. Mr Wright, who has no previous experience in teaching, will observe lessons and school routine for the first week, after which he will act as a floater and assist with backward groups.
 
July 24th, 1947
The Divisional Officer was present at Morning Assembly to present the House Trophy to the winning House, which for the second term running was St. George's. He also presented certificates for attendance and sports success. The Head Teacher then referred to Miss Brunton who is being transferred to Field End Road School next term. Miss Elliott visited the school later in the morning, to speak to the children who were being transferred to Field End Road School in September. Class A gave a concert to the Infant School this afternoon.
 
July 26th, 1947
Today School closes for the Summer Holidays. 54 scholars are being transferred to secondary schools and 170 to the new primary school in Field End Road.
 
September 9th, 1947
School opens today after the Summer Holidays. All the staff were present, including Mr ward and Mr Wright, the two temporary teachers waiting to be called up for emergency training. Fifty new babies were admitted and 49 transfers from other schools. The school roll today is 303.
 
September 12th, 1947
Mr Ward is leaving the staff today to join the staff of The Bourne Secondary Modern School, in order to gain experience with senior children. Mrs Horwood relinquishes her post as Milk Assistant today. For over three years she has worked admirably and most cheerfully under most trying conditions.
 
November 20th, 1947
School closed for Royal Wedding.
 
December 10th, 1947
The Infant Department was thrown open to the parents from 2 0'clock to 3.30pm this afternoon. There was a large attendance of parents who expressed their approval of the work being done in the school.
 
December 11th, 1947
The Junior Department was thrown open to parents from 2.00pm to 4.00pm this afternoon. The parents were entertained from 3.00pm to 4.00pm in the Dining Hall with a programme of items contributed by each class.
  Class D sang two songs.
  Class C gave verse speaking. They recited 3 poems.
  Class B gave a Physical Training display and a peasant dance.
  Class A gave a recital of carols, interspersed with scripture readings, all of which were committed to memory.
The parents showed great interest and appreciation throughout the procedings.
 
December 19th, 1947
School closes this afternoon for Xmas Holidays. Meals and milk have been arranged for those children desiring them during the holidays. Our Miss Williams and Miss Pygall are leaving the staff today. They are shortly sailing for South Africa to teach in the Transvaal.
