I have arranged for the children in these classes to have lessons in the Dining Hall. February 23rd, 1948 Mr L. Crewe appointed Relief School Keeper. March 11th, 1948 Class A (45 children), accompanied by 4 teachers, have gone to the London ZXoo today. April 6th, 1948 Our School Keeper, Mr Morris, underwent an operation for a duodenal ulcer on Friday, April 2nd from which he never regained consciousness. A letter of sympathy has been sent to Mrs Morris, and it has been decided to send a floral tribute on Saturday April 10th for Mr Morris' funeral. April 15th, 1948 The Doctor has made a tour of inspection of the school premises and reported favourably on the standard of cleanliness. April 26th, 1948 The King has approved the granting of a half holiday today, on the occasion of Their Majesties' Silver Wedding. May 24th, 1948 Empire Day. School reopened today after the Whitsun Holiday. 7 new children were admitted. The Juniors' Service which was held in the morning included suitable national hymns and prayers for our Country and the Empire. The Head Mistress addressed the children on the meaning of the Empire and the lessons to be learnt from the colours of the Union Jack. The service was concluded by Class A rendering Parry's 'Jerusalem' and cheers for the Empire and the Flag. The Infants' Service was conducted on the same lines, only the service was concluded with the children marching round The Flag. This took place in the afternoon. May 28th, 1948 Our Mr Davies and our Miss House have taken 15 boys and 15 girls to the St. Mary's Bay Camp, Dymchurch, today. In high spirits a very happy party set off by coach at 8.45. June 3rd, 1948 A class of 37 children in the charge of Mrs D. Kane and Mr. P. Hill went to the Uxbridge Swimming Baths for the first lesson this season. The party was conveyed by coach. June 8th, 1948 Class B went out today on an educational visit to the London Zoological Gardens. June 11th, 1948 The School Journey party returned at 6.00pm from St Mary's Bay Camp, Dymchurch. All looked well and happy though tired. From an educational point of view the holiday was a huge success. Places of historic interest such as Canterbury and Dover were visited. The children made collections of wild flowers and shells. The flowers were pressed and each specimen named. Each child kept a diary recording each day's happenings. The success of the holiday was due to the untiring efforts and devotion to duty of Miss House and Mr Davies. June 21st, 1948 On my arrival at school this morning I was informed by the School Keeper that thieves had broken into 5 classrooms, where they had forced open the teachers' desks and ransacked the drawers. They had also forced open one cupboard and broken into two shelters. The intruders made their way via the windows, several of which were damaged, and in one classroom the door was forced out of the brickwork. Presumably the thieves were after cash, and as far as can be ascertained, 25 shillings has been stolen from the school. The police were informed and a C.I.D. man has made some investigations. June 25th, 1948 Exhibits of some of the children's work were entered in the Ruislip and District Horticultural Society's show. The entries included pressed flowers, miniature gardens, stuffed toys, rugs, embroidery handiwork and floral designs. 7 of the exhibits were awarded prizes. July 23rd, 1948 School closed today for the Summer Vacation. Meals and milk facilities have been made available to approximately 100 children who desire these services throughout the holiday. September 7th, 1948 School reopened after the Summer Holidays. October 25th - 29th, 1948 United Nations Week. The timetable was suspended, more or less, during the afternoon sessions in the Junior School in order that a project on the United Nations might be done. Each of the 5 Junior classes took a continent, and undertook to find out all they could by collecting pictures, coins etc pertaining to the continent selected. As far as possible, the work was tied with the Scheme of Work in the class. For instance, national songs were taught in music lessons. On Wednesday morning at assembly the Headmistress gave a short address on the United Nations. Her theme for the whole service was 'Neighbourliness'. On Thursday afternoon Class 9, which had been studying 'Europe' gave a delightful half hour of singing to the school. They sang 8 European folk songs, which were interspersed by remarks from Mr Davies who gave delightful word pictures of the various countries visited in the songs. On Friday the classes toured each room in turn, to see the week's work done on each continent. This tour of inspection, so to speak, united all the nations and concluded 'United Nations Week'. November 9th, 1948 The Divisional Education Officer visited the school today to discuss financial arrangements and to inspect progess of the work in hand on the new staffroom and the covered way. November 26th, 1948 Approval has been granted for the appointmant of a Welfare Assistant, Mrs Leach, who commences on December 1st 1948 A break-in took place in the School Canteen, and a considerable amount of food was stolen. At this time there was still post-war rationing in Britain. December 6th, 1948 Burglary in canteen. On the night of December 4th, thieves broke into the school canteen. The discovery was made on Sunday morning by the School Keeper's assistant, who was making his routine inspection of the kitchen boiler. He contacted the school Keeper, Mr Crewe, who notified me and the police by telephone. A C.I.D official called this morning to investigate the matter. The intruders entered by breaking a window in the Dining Hall and by forcing a window and hatchway to the kitchen. A considerable amount of provisions was taken including approximately 200lbs of dried fruit and 56lbs of sugar. The teacher's desk and cupboard in the Hall classroom was also rifled. December 9th, 1948 The Infants and Juniors were entertained by a conjuror and Punch and Judy show. December 14th, 1948 A very happy Xmas party, arranged by the teachers and aided by contributions from the parents, was given to the Infant School this afternoon. December 15th, 1948 A similar party was given to the Junior School today. Entertainment was provided by several children, under the lively direction and compering of Mr Quince. December 16th, 1948 Parents were present in large numbers at the Christmas Concert given by the Junior School. Each class provided an item in the form of a Nativity Play or Christmas Play. The concert was concluded by a Nine Carol Service, beautifully rendered by Class 9. This service afforded an opportunity for the parents to join in some of the better known carols. December 16th, 1948 St. Andrew's House was successful in winning the House Trophy, which was presented by The Rev. Luther Bouch, who delighted us all with his address. School closes today for the Christmas Holidays. Meals and milk have been arranged for approximately 100 children. | ||
