They will do this because the pollution of the lead in the exhaust can be inhaled by children and is supposed to make them less clever and more unhealthy. For leaded petrol cars you can either change part of the engine (which is expensive - about £500) or you can use this special formula of chemicals which you squirt into your petrol tank each time you fill up with petrol. They haven't decided on which formula of chemicals to use for this. With leaded petrol cars they have valves that need lead to stop the metal wearing away. The special spray acts like the lead so you can use unleaded petrol. We did a survey of all the teachers that have old cars and asked them if they knew that this was going to happen. None of them knew. If you have a car and it was made before about 1994 then you will certainly have to check. If you have leaded petrol try and sell yours now, otherwise you may not get much money for it in the year 2000. The same type of thing happened on the 1st January 1996 when the electricity supply in the UK was reduced from 240 volts to 220 volts. Not many people know about this either. by Thomas and Nishma Wonder Car The Wonder Car is a car which has surprised the whole world. It is powered on electricity and was developed by the US Government. The car doesn't make fumes which pollute the air. When the car comes out it will cost around £18000. The car can give around 80 miles per gallon. People say this is the biggest breakthrough since the combustion engine because people won't have to use so much oil and petrol, and it won't pollute the air. Mrs Lomax's Class |
