| Class Visits: Juniors' Visit to see Aesop's Fables at the Savoy Theatre All the Junior classes went to see the production of Aesop's Fables at the Savoy Theatre in the West End of London on Tuesday, 9th December 1997. We took 5 coaches and left at 11.00 in the morning, eating packed lunches on the coach. The show lasted an hour and a half, and we aimed to get back by 4.00 in the afternoon. One coach broke down on the way there but the children managed to arrive just in time for the start, and one coach got trapped in a traffic jam on the way back, and was an hour late. All the Infant classes went to the same show a few days later. When you went into the theatre it was like a landslide... Lucy There were other schools there. We saw 13 fables. There were meant to be 14 but they missed one out... Lee The Savoy Theatre was lovely. When I walked in I thought we were in the wrong place. Half of the ceiling was painted like a sky with clouds, then the other half was white. The stage was round and wooden. There were two balconies. My favourite costumes were the Sun and the Dove. It was good the way they got changed so quickly... Luzie The Savoy Theatre was good because the chairs were comfy and the scenery was painted realistically. The theatre was painted so it looked bigger. The actors and actresses danced and sung brilliantly. There were parts where the audience could shout and sing... Thomas We saw the back of the Savoy Hotel going in. When I first walked in it was like a slope going down. When we got to the seats they were very comfortable. The carpet had a pattern which I've got at home. The toilets were clean, but they could have had more. When you go up the steps to the toilet the walls were painted colourfully with blue and grapes. The lighting was incredibly good and when you looked up at the ceiling there were clouds, it looked like the sky. The funniest bit in the play was when the sheep went off the stage and sat on a girl's lap in the audience. The best bit was when they held hands and did a cartwheel... Ayisha The theatre was a lot smaller than I thought it would be. You got a very good view from all of the seats and you could hear the sound very well. You still had a good view right at the back. They made the Ants' and the Grasshopper's costumes have six legs on them. On the way to the theatre one of the coaches broke down and we had to wait for them. On the way back one coach got delayed in traffic for an hour... Hayley The theatre was very big and all the doors were made from leather. It had a special place for royalty to sit and watch. My favourite characters were the Tortoise and the Sheep with the pink scarf. I liked the Sheep beacause they were saying everything the Boy was saying but in a sheep way, and they all stood on top of each other once. I think all the actors must have worked very hard... Verity Aesop was an acrobat, he did flips and cartwheels, he was funny. It had a good story and they talked clearly and I could hear every word... Ian When we were there smoke was let off to make a good effect but it made the people below start to cough. I was surprised only five people acted the whole thing. It was in the West End but we didn't see the Christmas lights, we only saw one massive lighted sign saying 'Budd'... Tate There were a lot of characters, in fact so many I can't name them. There was no interval so we had to last the whole show without going to the toilet. Most of us lasted... Zoe You got to sing a short song. It was very good but some children were screaming the song out loud. There were five actors, but the producer was also in it. He was a spare. He came out and chatted to some of the children before it started. The actors spoke loudly because they had a microphone on their heads, but it was really small so you couldn't really see it. I thought there would have been lots of actors, about 20 different people to do the show, not 5. The clothes were excellent. I think that if you wanted to buy one of the costumes it would cost hundreds of pounds. I didn't like going on the coach because I felt a bit ill, and we were on the coach for at least an hour. I loved it very much... Stacey I thought this was an excellent production. The singing and acting was brilliant and they said things as if they really meant it. I thought there would be at least ten actors and actresses in the whole production, but there were only five. There were so many characters to play, I wonder how they managed it! Some of the characters were really funny, like Aesop's master, a midget (played by someone kneeling down) who needed a megaphone to make himself clear! I thoroughly enjoyed myself... Corinne It was a great show. I will try to go there again... Helen |
